{"id":5373,"date":"2011-07-14T22:17:03","date_gmt":"2011-07-15T02:17:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hagarty-on-wine.com\/OnWineBlog\/?p=5373"},"modified":"2011-07-22T13:19:59","modified_gmt":"2011-07-22T17:19:59","slug":"virginia-wine-writer-goes-missing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.hagarty-on-wine.com\/OnWineBlog\/virginia-wine-writer-goes-missing\/","title":{"rendered":"Virginia Wine Writer Goes Missing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Walker Elliott Rowe Published Two Books on Virginia Wine<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5389\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5389\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5389\" title=\"IMG_5479\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hagarty-on-wine.com\/OnWineBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG_5479-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wandering through Virginia&#39;s Vineyards<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For the better half of the last decade, Walker Elliott Rowe was a presence in Virginia wine.\u00a0 He wrote two popular books on the subject&#8212;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wandering-through-Virginias-Vineyards-Elliott\/dp\/1934074047\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1310139468&amp;sr=1-1-spell\">Wandering through Virginia\u2019s Vineyards<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/History-Virginia-Wines-Grapes-Glass\/dp\/1596297018\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1310139637&amp;sr=1-1-spell\">A History of Virginia Wines<\/a><\/em>&#8212;and tended a vineyard on his Rappahannock County farm.\u00a0 But he has not been seen in the Old Dominion for awhile and no new wine books have been published.\u00a0 What gives?<\/p>\n<p>It seems Rowe has reinvented himself and is now living in Santiago, Chile.\u00a0 This writer recently caught up with him via Skype&#8212;the software application that allows users to make voice calls over the Internet.\u00a0 We chatted for an hour as he sat in a Starbucks in Santiago.\u00a0 He discussed his new life and why Virginia wine was an enjoyable but past chapter on his literary journey.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Virginia to Chile.\u00a0 How So?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5380\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5380\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5380\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hagarty-on-wine.com\/OnWineBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/me_at_mexican_restaurant-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5380\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Walker Elliot Rowe<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In a word, employment.\u00a0 Chile\u2019s economy is roaring along while America\u2019s continues to struggle in recession-like doldrums.\u00a0 I grew weary of being laid off from one job after another. My former wife was from Ecuador and I speak Spanish so South America was always an attractive place to me.\u00a0 I no longer contribute to my<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rosewoodhillfarm.com\/\">Rosewood Hill Farm<\/a><\/em><\/span> blog.\u00a0 I now write at <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gringolandiasantiago.com\/\">Gringolandiasantiago.com<\/a><\/em> on life in Chile.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chile is known for its wine.\u00a0 Are you writing on the country\u2019s vineyards?<\/strong><br \/>\nActually, I did write a book on Chilean wine back in 2005, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wine-Communism-Volcanoes-Story-Chilean\/dp\/1934074039\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1310725534&amp;sr=8-1\">Wine, Communism and Volcanoes<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 But today, my love affair with wine is limited to drinking it.\u00a0 I don\u2019t intend to write on the subject again.\u00a0 My interests are wide-ranging and I felt I had fully explored not only Virginia wine, but the subject in general. I simply didn\u2019t have anymore to say.\u00a0 Life moves on and so have I.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what are you doing for a living?<\/strong><br \/>\nI am a software engineer by vocation and currently working for a computer security firm with clients in the banking industry.\u00a0 We provide network protection to banking institutions.\u00a0 Business is good.<\/p>\n<p>I still love writing and contribute material to the blog segment of <em>the Santiago Times. <\/em>The paper has given me license to write on any subject and I view myself as the paper\u2019s essayist in the mold of Christopher Hitchens.\u00a0 I\u2019m also researching my next book.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And the subject?<\/strong><br \/>\nI have a degree in mathematics and have always been fascinated with the logic of mathematical proofs and deductive reasoning. I\u2019m planning on writing a book on math for the lay person but will research it for few more years.\u00a0 Over the past year, I have been studying calculus with one of my two sons, both of whom still live in the states.\u00a0 I study everyday and have read ancient Greek mathematical texts and works on math by French, German and Swiss writers.<\/p>\n<p>It all sounds a bit esoteric but the beauty and clarity of mathematics draws me to the subject.\u00a0 The challenge is to write a treatise that the average person will find engaging while simultaneously enlightening.\u00a0 It\u2019s far removed from wine writing, although no less interesting to me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So how does Santiago compare with Rappahannock County?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5388\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5388\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5388\" title=\"IMG_5472\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hagarty-on-wine.com\/OnWineBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG_5472-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5388\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A History of Virginia Wines<\/p><\/div>\n<p>They are both beautiful in different ways.\u00a0 In Virginia, I commuted to work in Northern Virginia and worked my farm in my spare time.\u00a0 It was a tough commute and a somewhat lonely life out on the farm.\u00a0 I simply grew tired of working one job after another with no consistent employment.\u00a0 Contracts came and went and as soon as a firm no longer needed your services you were sent packing.\u00a0 I do miss Rappahannock County\u2019s beauty.<\/p>\n<p>Here in Santiago the economy is vibrant.\u00a0 I am content with my current job and the stability it provides.\u00a0\u00a0 But if I wanted to move to another company, the opportunity is there.\u00a0 Down here even savings accounts are earning four percent interest; that says a lot about the local economy.<\/p>\n<p>Santiago is like living in New York City but with the climate of San Diego.\u00a0 It\u2019s beautiful.\u00a0 I can go skiing in the Andes on a Saturday morning and the next afternoon be surfing in the Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 It\u2019s an ultra modern city with great restaurants and cultural events.\u00a0 I even play soccer with my business colleagues.\u00a0 There is so much to do to keep a single guy happy.\u00a0 That was not the case on my Virginia farm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Closing thoughts?<\/strong><br \/>\nI\u2019ve had an interesting life.\u00a0 I grew up in Georgetown, South Carolina, the son of a tug boat captain and farmer.
