{"id":5409,"date":"2011-08-05T10:35:24","date_gmt":"2011-08-05T14:35:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hagarty-on-wine.com\/OnWineBlog\/?p=5409"},"modified":"2011-12-27T22:42:37","modified_gmt":"2011-12-28T02:42:37","slug":"getting-to-know-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hagarty-on-wine.com\/OnWineBlog\/getting-to-know-you\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting To Know You"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><strong>Creating a Wine Society Gathers People Together You May Rarely See&#8212;Your Neighbors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2000, Robert Putnam penned a bestseller titled, <em>Bowling Alone<\/em>.\u00a0 The book explored how Americans have become increasingly disconnected with one another.\u00a0 Today his findings are still valid, notwithstanding the avalanche of social media.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-5418\" title=\"Bowling Alone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hagarty-on-wine.com\/OnWineBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Bowling-Alone-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Putnam\u2019s tome&#8212;all 544 pages&#8212;centers on the deterioration of ways people have come to interact with one another over the past two generations. One small example is the number of Americans attending public meetings of any kind declined 40% over the last thirty-five years.<\/p>\n<p>The book is packed with voluminous data showing how Americans have grown increasingly isolated, less empathetic toward their fellow citizens, angrier and less willing to unite in communities or as a Nation.<\/p>\n<p>Sounds like a press release emanating from Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n<p>To buck the trend, Putnam called for more educational programs, work-based initiatives and community service programs.\u00a0 But there\u2019s another easy and enjoyable way to link with the locals.\u00a0 Share a bottle of wine.<\/p>\n<p>Today in the United States, there are over 40 million wine drinkers.\u00a0 And in 2011, the United States assumed the title of the largest wine consuming nation on earth.\u00a0 So if you are looking for something you might have in common with folks in your neighborhood, reach for a corkscrew, a wine glass and a bottle of Cabernet.<\/p>\n<p>This writer founded a community wine society back in 2005 and has held over thirty-three tastings since first sampling South African wines in a group setting.\u00a0 Since then, our posse has pursued the world of fine wine, evaluating bottles from almost every producing region in the world. \u00a0Uh, we haven\u2019t gotten to Chinese wines yet.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been a rewarding experience.\u00a0 And while it\u2019s been fun tasting all those great wines, deepening existing friendships and creating new ones has been even more satisfying.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-5423\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hagarty-on-wine.com\/OnWineBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/images-7-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Think you might not be up to hosting a wine tasting party?\u00a0 It\u2019s easier than you might imagine. Here are some thoughts on establishing a local wine association; and dismiss any preconceived notions of its difficulty. Simply assume the mantle of its chairperson and success will follow.\u00a0 It\u2019s a given your disciples will enjoy the experience because the social magic is in the wine.\u00a0 Your job is simply the facilitator.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No need to be an expert<\/strong><br \/>\nWine provides an endless opportunity to learn something new, so starting from a position of unfamiliarity can actually be an asset.\u00a0 It will be rare to find folks in your neighborhood who think they are experts.\u00a0 And if they aren\u2019t pros, you needn\u2019t be either.\u00a0 A love of wine, coupled with friendly people to drink it with, fulfills the basic requirements for forming a group.\u00a0 A wine society enables everyone to learn together.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Start Small<\/strong><br \/>\nYour first meetings should be limited in size; eight to ten people makes for a good starter group.\u00a0 A bottle of wine holds 25.6 ounces, so five bottles will provide ten participants over two ounces of each selection, or about 13 ounces.\u00a0 You can provide the wines yourself or each couple can bring a bottle of their choice.\u00a0 The tasting can be a stand alone event or it can be the lead-in to a group dinner or bar-b-que.\u00a0 With the focus on wine, initial meetings might best be limited to just tasting.\u00a0 Expanding the format can come later.\u00a0 A selection of gourmet cheeses and crackers makes a nice accompaniment to the wine itself.<\/p>\n<p>Our local wine society typically has twenty to twenty-two people at each meeting tasting some thirteen wines, or somewhat over half a bottle per person.\u00a0 As a group grows in size, two bottles per each selection will offer tasters the opportunity to sample more of each wine although less variety.<\/p>\n<p>Levy a fee that reflects the cost of all the wine and food.\u00a0 You do not want to go broke.\u00a0 Avoid inexpensive wines readily available at the nearby grocery store.\u00a0 You\u2019re goal is to expand everyone\u2019s palate by tasting quality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rely on the pros<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3077\" title=\"Wine Rack\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hagarty-on-wine.com\/OnWineBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_3446-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>To select your wines, trust the guidance of a wine merchant.\u00a0 Describe your goals and ask for suggestions. Over time, your relationship with these pros may result in occasional discounts.\u00a0 A merchant who knows you will be buying quality wines on a regular basis will want to keep you as a customer.<\/p>\n<p>Each session should have a focus&#8212;such as France, Italy, Chile or Virginia&#8212;and include both whites and reds, unless the group requests otherwise. \u00a0Or, you could have a\u00a0selection\u00a0of wines from around the world. \u00a0Large wine retailers often will be able to provide printouts on each bottle purchased describing the aroma, palate flavors and scores awarded by nationally known experts.\u00a0 Such information is helpful in sussing out the tastes of each wine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Encourage discussion<\/strong><br \/>\nAs each wine is poured, elicit reactions from the attendees.\u00a0 Not everyone will feel comfortable commenting, especially if they think they know little about wine.\u00a0 But listening to the opinion of even the novice can provide insight. \u00a0Initially, don\u2019t be concerned with generating a host of detailed comments like, \u201cA touch of pineapple with melon notes and a veil of citrus.\u201d \u00a0Such language can intimidate wine newbies.\u00a0 Descriptors like, \u201cSmells great\u2026is fruity\u2026has a bite\u2026smooth finish,\u201d or simply, \u201cI\u2019d buy this one,\u201d are easier to understand and can generate profitable discussion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your responsibility<\/strong><br \/>\nAs chairman of your society you will need some basic materials.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a starter list.<\/p>\n<p><em>Good quality wine glasses<\/em>.\u00a0 These need not be expensive but an all purpose glass capable of bringing out the best in both white and red wines is important.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sufficient seating<\/em>. \u00a0As your society expands, word will spread and you\u2019ll receive additional requests to join, so extra seating will be needed.\u00a0 Choose a room large enough to place everyone in a circle.\u00a0 Lawn chairs and bar stools will do just fine as a group expands.\u00a0 Your members are not expecting to be seated in King Louis XIV chairs.\u00a0 Once the tasting begins, any concerns about the seating arrangements will evaporate along with the disappearing wine.<\/p>\n<p><em>Decant the reds<\/em>.\u00a0 About three hours prior to the event, open each red and pour it into a pitcher and repour it back into the bottle using a small funnel.\u00a0 This will enable the wines to open up and offer maximum aromas and flavors.\u00a0 The whites should be chilled but do not have to be opened till the tasting begins.<\/p>\n<p><em>Scoring sheets for evaluating the wines<\/em>.\u00a0 You will likely find some of the members may not want to score the wines.\u00a0 But at least two or three guests should make some attempt at rating each wine so you can select the \u201cfavorites\u201d at the end of the evening.\u00a0 An excellent scoring format is the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.musingsonthevine.com\/MusingsUCDavisForm.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">UC Davis 20 point system<\/span><\/a><\/span> that awards points for appearance, aroma, palate, finish and overall impression.\u00a0 While this can get a bit techie, it is a valuable way to rate the total impact of each bottle.<\/p>\n<p>Bowling alone may represent today\u2019s isolated society but there is no need to drink alone.\u00a0 Many of your friends and neighbors will be pleased to receive a call or email announcing the formation of a neighborhood wine society.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Franklin once said, \u201cThe discovery of a wine is of greater moment than the discovery of a constellation.\u00a0 The universe is full of stars.\u201d\u00a0 Begin your personal discovery of wine stars and experience how it can enrich the lives of you and your companions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Published in the 2011 winter edition of the <em>Virginia Wine Gazette<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5406\" title=\"Landscape\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hagarty-on-wine.com\/OnWineBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG_5536-500x375.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hagarty-on-wine.com\/OnWineBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG_5536-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.hagarty-on-wine.com\/OnWineBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG_5536-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hagarty-on-wine.com\/OnWineBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG_5536.jpg 1066w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Creating a Wine Society Gathers People Together You May Rarely See&#8212;Your Neighbors In 2000, Robert Putnam penned a bestseller titled, Bowling Alone.\u00a0 The book explored how Americans have become increasingly disconnected with one another.\u00a0 Today his findings are still valid, notwithstanding the avalanche of social media.
